FALL 2019
Fall is all about trees and mother nature’s amazing displays of color. In mid-October, we were at Yondota Falls near Marenisco, Michigan. The blazing fall colors, combined with the gushing waterfalls, were spectacular.
This bridge is just before the start of Yondota Falls.
This section of Yondota Falls is more of a tall rapids than a water fall but it’s very pretty.
Another place we enjoy in the fall is Cathedral Point which is south of Boulder Junction. Barb is a tree hugger so this is her kind of place. You don’t want to stand close to the bottom of the trees and look up because you’ll fall over backwards. The white pines get to be over 120’ tall.
There is no way to take a picture to show how tall the trees are, a video is the only way.
Momma duck with her ducklings crossing our lake.
This picture is at Pipke Park where the Presque Isle river starts. I walk Gilmore here almost every day.
This incredibly intense tree is where the Presque Isle River empties into Lake Superior.
This is Gorge Falls which is part of the Black River Scenic Byway. It’s one of our go to places to take visitors.
So much water was flowing over the falls that the froth formed swirling patterns along the shore. It looked like bubble bath.
Gilmore loves to sing. We may try to get him on America’s Got Talent or the Voice next year.
Halloween is our favorite holiday. Barb and I both volunteered at the local elementary school’s “Kornstalk Karnival.” It reminds me a lot of what school was like when we were young. They have games like the toilet paper toss and the school principal spends an hour in the “pie in the face” booth. The kids win lots of candy.
The following week we helped with Presque Isle’s “Haunted Ice Shanties Spooktacular.” There are games for the kids, haunted ice shanties, a haunted hay ride, a giant living tree that walks around, and the local catholic church serves food. There are luminaries on the walk between where the games and haunted ice shanties are located and the church. It’s all free.
Barb was a witch and I was a biker. Several people said they didn’t recognize me with hair. They thought I was a local derelict that had just shown up.
The biggest news from the fall was that our youngest son David married his long-time girlfriend Courtney in mid-October. We are thrilled to welcome her to the family. The wedding was small and intimate which was very nice. They are absolutely giddy about their puppy named Baxter. So of course the dog sitter brought him so he could be in their wedding pictures. He wore a doggy tux complete with a bow tie.
For their honeymoon they went to the Greek Island of Santorini. This was one of the pictures they sent us from their room. Makes you want to grab your passport and go.
That’s the latest from the North Woods where as Garrison Keillor would say: all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average. Hope things are good with all of you.
